Pyres had been created in the center of the encampment, a circular formation of tepees and huts made of wooden poles and lashed together with sinew and bear hides. The heir of the camp was grim, morose even, as Sel and his company sauntered in a few hours after noon. It was misting, a cold dampness that verged on ice, wetting Selâs robes and making him wish that he could return to his preferred form as an eagle. However, he wished to use verbal speech, so he decided to put up with the irritable weather.
The druid walked over to the central pyre, poking a body with a walking stick that he had found along the way. The corpse, apparently a Bear Clan brave, gazed up, its eyes dried and having the consistency of a stale prune. The rest of his body wasnât much different, and some of the corpseâs skin flaked off at Selâs prodding. Suletu looked down at the corpses, recognizing their faces, and her facial expression was stolid.
Sel shapeshifted back into wereagle form, preparing a fire spell. The remaining barbarians clamored around, as Selâs helix of fire leapt from his talons, igniting the wood underneath the massive pile of bodies. He circled the pyre, repeating the process, until the whole place smelled of burning wood and flesh, and a massive column of smoke rose high above the trees.
Helki stood nearby her large hut, leaning against it with her arms crossed. âTheyâll know that weâre burning our own. Theyâll know that their treachery prevailed.â
She walked into the hut, brushing her black, silver-waved hair with a hand, as if inviting Sel to pursue. He did so, and was followed by Grimprey and Suletu, both in an understandably somber mood. Within were some more of the higher-ranking braves and shamans, sitting about a small fire and carving small totems in the shapes of bears and bear skulls, obviously symbolic of mourning.
âCowards!â Helki exploded, throwing a stone jar of bear potion. The jar erupted, blasting the side of the wall with blood. Sel jumped back a bit.
He had returned to human form, and was sensing the presence of the Abomination of Eyes. It was strong here. Strong near Helki. He looked into her mind. She had no intention of calling off the battle plan, and was planning on asking him to fly to the other locations where their tribe was camped, to check up on them and hopefully warn them in case the salt fairies had yet to deliver their terrible poison.
âI should have seen this.â Helki lamented, placing her hands on her face.
Grimprey stuck up for her. âChieftess. There was no way to know.â
His attempt at comforting her did no justice.
Helki continued. âWhy did we not see the spirits entering our camp? At least one of us should have sensed the salt spirits.â
Grimprey shrugged. Sel stepped forward a bit.
âChieftess.â Sel answered, clearing his throat. âItâs the Abomination of Eyes. What you call the Eye of God. It probably altered your perceptions. Made them invisible.
